Optimizing the use of private vehicles through shared transportation services is essential. Carpooling addresses the issue of single-occupancy vehicle use at minimal cost and without requiring changes to street infrastructure. This study aimed to identify and analyze the factors influencing the willingness to carpool for educational-related commutes in District 6 of Tehran; this analysis distinguishes the current study from similar research. Conducted as a descriptive-analytical study, data were collected via questionnaires from 120 staff members and faculty members within the study area. Statistical tests—specifically Phi, Eta, and Cramer’s V—and structural modeling using AMOS Graphics software were employed for data analysis. The results indicated that factors such as the number of passengers, social interaction benefits, the pleasure of a pleasant commute, information sharing, reliability, trust, peace of mind, safety, and cost savings are highly significant to individuals. The Phi test regarding commuting history and the Cramer’s V test revealed a strong, significant relationship between a lack of access to a private vehicle and the willingness to carpool. Significant relationships were also found between the willingness to carpool and factors such as social interaction benefits, a sense of belonging, a sense of usefulness, reliability, trust, and peace of mind. Furthermore, structural modeling showed a positive and significant relationship between the benefits of carpooling and the willingness to do so. Key drivers for carpooling included reduced traffic congestion and benefits to the environment, society, and others; conversely, the preference for traveling alone, concerns regarding time constraints, and the difficulty of finding a suitable carpool partner were identified as major factors influencing the decision not to carpool. The pleasure of a pleasant journey, a sense of belonging, trust, and the ability to get things done while traveling are the benefits of carpooling that can pave the way for greater acceptance of this mode of travel for educational trips.
