Objective: In this study, by integrating a systems thinking perspective in sports tourism with a futures studies approach, an attempt was made to identify the key driving forces influencing the sustainable development of sports tourism in Khuzestan Province. the primary objective was to identify and analysis these drivers in order to provide a coherent and integrated framework for planning the development of this industry within the study area.
Methodology: The statistical population consisted of managers and experts from sports federations, specialists from the Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts Organization, and experts from travel agencies engaged in tour operations. by collecting the opinions of these groups, the factors influencing and being influenced by the current and future status of sports tourism in Khuzestan Province were identified. subsequently, the degree of influence and dependence of each factor on the sustainable development of sports tourism in Khuzestan Province was evaluated and classified using the MICMAC software.
Findings: The results obtained from the MICMAC analysis indicated that the distribution of variables across the influence dependence matrix reflects the instability of the system governing the sustainable development of sports tourism in Khuzestan Province. accordingly, the variables were classified into four main categories: dependent variables, linkage variables, independent variables, and regulatory (autonomous) variables. finally, 17 variables with the highest levels of direct and indirect influence were identified as the key drivers shaping the future of sustainable sports tourism development in Khuzestan Province (VAR01, VAR02, VAR03, VAR04, VAR05, VAR09, VAR14, VAR16, VAR18, VAR19, VAR20, VAR35, VAR38, VAR40, VAR43, VAR44 and VAR55).
Conclusion: The research findings indicate that among the identified drivers, natural attractions associated with coastal, water-based, and summer sports exerted the greatest influence on the sustainable development of sports tourism in Khuzestan Province.
